Vehicle Description

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks

good no matter how its built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring,

whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough

classics create a confident swagger thats universally admired.

That means, if youre looking to ride in style, you really cant go

wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body. And when you factor in this rides

big block drivetrain, tasteful interior and first rate,

all-American sheet metal, you get the picturesque profile of an

incredible muscle car!

For consignment, the 1970 version of the illustrious Chevrolet

Chevelle complete with the SS396 package. This car is a one owner

car complete with repair invoices, history through the years and

even the original dealership invoice. As is the case with many a

muscle car of the era, the original drivetrain is long gone,

however this car does hold an era-correct engine under its domed

hood.

Exterior

For 1970, the face-lifted Chevelle moved an impressive 634K units.

Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it also

solidified the nameplate as part of Chevys oft romanticized

golden era. At the front of this coupe, a split grille hangs a

prominent "SS" emblem in the horizontal chromed mid grille bar.

Stainless-trimmed dual headlights are flanking on either side and

are within Black Cherry panels. Below is a nice and shiny bumper.

Opposite that bumper, a domed Super Sport dual white racing wide

striped hood leads the eye to fresh glass thats seated in original

stainless frames. At the base of those frames, chrome door handles,

a chrome drivers mirror and white-tinged "SS396" badges complement

14-inch Magnum 500 wheels. And at the back of the car, a second

original shiny bumper, hangs a standard Super Sport inlay. All

bathed in a Black Cherry respray and wide white stripes racing up

the middle of the hood and trunk lid. Paint has areas of bubbling

and inclusions, but no rust is noted, and the white stripes also

show some sap damage peppering them.

Interior

Its correct combination of bench and bucket seats that are firm to

the touch, encased in black vinyl, original belts, and high backs.

This seating presents very well and may be the original materials

and foam making up the buckets and bench. In front of those seats,

a straight rally dash frames a trio of gauges inset into a black

textured dash front. Below that dash, clean black carpet floats an

original center console that has a shifter that would make an

airline pilot proud, and this is inside a correct console. At the

sides of that carpet, door panels center classy stainless trim and

bright embellishments, bright handles and supple, comfortable

armrests. In front of the driver the steering wheel laps a black

column. And behind the passengers, the cars restored trunk is

finished with a correct jack and a full-size spare tire all

floating on black painted steel with evidence of pan repairs. The

headliner shows some sagging and wrinkles and is also black.

Drivetrain

Gaze into the satin black engine bay and youll find a circa 1969

396ci V8 courtesy of a full-size passenger car, all bedecked in a

chipped coating of orange/red GM paint. That block balances a

polished and decaled open air cleaner on a 4-bbl carburetor. This

feeds Chevrolet heads that are topped by chromed valve covers. A

TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is strapped to the rear of the

mill, and it pushes power rearward to a 12-bolt Positraction rear

axle.

Undercarriage

Some spotty surface rust is noted on the floor pans, frame and

suspension components but no invasive rust is seen, even on the

rockers. Independent coil springs upfront and a 4 link with coil

springs in the rear are on for the suspension, and power disc

brakes for the front, and power drums for the rear. Like new dual

exhaust with some Flowmaster mufflers are on and making their way

rearward and looking just fine.

Drive-Ability

Our muscle car aficionado snapped up this test drive, and when he

returned he reported nice acceleration, smooth shifting, good

cornering and all the essentials were working swimmingly. Overall,

it was a very happy motoring and he quipped about how many looks he

got during his drive...personally I think people were staring at

the car.
