The 1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra was the first factory performance Mustang of the modern era and is now one of the most collectible Fox body Mustangs, second only to the SVT Cobra R. Created by the dedicated driving enthusiast engineers from Fords Special Vehicles Team, the SVT Cobra was built to satisfy the desires of the knowledgeable driving enthusiast. Launching at the 1992 Chicago Auto show, the SVT Cobra was destined to be a one year only model, with just 4,993 units produced. Available only in the hatchback body style, and only with a manual transmission, the SVT Cobra was a comprehensive performance package. Starting with the engine, SVT engineers utilized the GTs H.O. 302CI short block but added a roller camshaft with roller rockers produced for Ford by Crane Cams, GT40 cast iron heads and intake, a 65mm throttle body, and a larger mass air flow sensor, and 24lb/hr. fuel injectors. These changes resulted in a net increase of 30hp over the stock GTs 205hp, and an engine that felt noticeably livelier in the upper RPM range. This fully awakened 5.0L V-8 was then mated exclusively to the Borg Warner T-5 five speed manual transmission. The driveline was beefed up with a heavy-duty clutch and driveshaft, and the standard Ford 8.8-inch rear axle was available only with the 3.08:1 ratio. The SVT Cobra chassis was improved with specially valved shocks and struts courtesy of Tokico, bushings were stiffened in the upper control arms while the front springs were softened slightly to overcome the stiffer sidewall of the upgraded P245/45ZR17 Goodyears wrapped around SVT Cobra specific 17 aluminum directional wheels. On the outside, the SVT Cobra received very subtle changes. Paint colors were limited to Vibrant Red, Teal Metallic, and Black, with SVT Cobra specific front grille, rear tail lamps with amber turn signals, and Cobra snake emblems on the front fenders replacing the GTs 5.0 badge. The interior of the Cobra was limited to either grey or black with cloth or leather seats, and the only SVT Cobra specific item was the now super rare Cobra floor mats.
